How Much Does a Tow Truck Cost in Saskatoon?

When you need a tow truck, the first question is usually simple: How much is this going to cost?


As the owner of YXE Towing, I know that getting a clear answer matters. Most people calling for a tow did not plan for the expense, and the price can depend on much more than how far the truck has to drive. The type of vehicle, how it needs to be loaded, where it is located, its condition, the destination, weather, and the amount of work required can all affect the final price.


We put this guide together to give Saskatoon drivers a straightforward explanation of our published towing rates and the situations that can change the cost of each particular job.

A straightforward local tow is generally the least complicated type of towing job. For example, if your car will not start in a Saskatoon neighbourhood and can be safely loaded onto the appropriate tow equipment, the job is relatively simple.

Our current general range for most local towing jobs is $85 to $175, including the initial hookup and first several kilometres.


That range is intentionally broad because two vehicles sitting on the same street can require completely different towing procedures.


A running vehicle with functioning wheels and steering is much easier to load than a vehicle with accident damage, locked wheels, a flat tire, mechanical damage, or another condition that prevents normal loading.

Why Does the Price of a Tow Vary?

The biggest pricing variable is not simply how far the truck has to drive. It is what the operator has to do to safely get the vehicle onto the truck and keep it secure during transport.


1. Vehicle weight and dimensions

A compact car, full-size pickup, work van and larger SUV do not place the same demands on towing equipment.

Weight affects the truck's available payload and the equipment required to safely load and secure the vehicle. Vehicle width, wheelbase, ground clearance and overall length also matter, particularly when loading onto a deck or flatbed.

A vehicle that is technically movable may still require different equipment from a normal passenger car because of its dimensions or weight distribution.


2. Can the vehicle roll and steer?

This is one of the most important mechanical variables.

A normally functioning vehicle can usually be loaded by its intended wheels with relatively little additional handling. A vehicle with a locked steering system, seized brakes, damaged suspension, missing wheels or other mechanical problems can require substantially more care.

The distinction is important:


Runs but won't drive:
The engine and transmission may function, but the vehicle cannot safely propel itself. This is generally straightforward to tow.


Doesn't roll:
A seized brake, damaged wheel bearing, transmission problem or other mechanical issue can prevent the wheels from turning normally.


Doesn't steer:
If the steering is locked or damaged, the vehicle cannot simply be pulled into position like a normal rolling vehicle.


Partially damaged:
After a collision, one corner of the vehicle may be sitting differently from the others, which can change how it has to be loaded.

These conditions can change the equipment and handling required even when the destination is only a few kilometres away.


3. Pickup position can matter as much as distance

A vehicle sitting in an open parking lot is very different from one that is wedged into a confined space.

Access can become more complicated when a vehicle is:

  • Parked tightly between other vehicles
  • Facing the wrong direction for the available access
  • In a narrow alley
  • Inside a confined parkade
  • On a steep driveway
  • Against a curb or obstruction
  • Partially blocked by another vehicle
  • Positioned where the tow truck cannot approach directly


The important measurement is not simply the distance from the vehicle to the destination. The operator also needs enough room to position the truck, deploy the equipment and establish a safe loading angle.


4. Ground clearance changes loading requirements

Low vehicles require more attention than their dimensions might suggest.


A lowered car, sports car or vehicle with a damaged front end may have very little clearance between the bumper, underbody and loading surface. The loading angle created by the tow truck's deck or ramps therefore becomes important.

If the approach angle is too aggressive, the vehicle can contact the ramp or deck before the wheels are properly positioned.


This is why two vehicles of similar weight can require different loading techniques.


5. Wheel position and drivetrain configuration matter

Where the vehicle's drive wheels sit and whether those wheels can rotate freely can affect how it needs to be handled.

A vehicle with functional rolling wheels is fundamentally different from one with:

  • Locked drive wheels
  • A damaged axle
  • A broken steering linkage
  • A seized wheel
  • Missing wheels
  • A damaged suspension component


The operator has to account for what is actually supporting the vehicle rather than assuming all four wheels can simply be used normally.


6. Distance is measured differently from the way customers often think about it

A customer may think of a tow as "10 kilometres," but there are several distances involved:

Dispatch distance: how far the truck travels to reach the pickup.

Loaded distance: how far the vehicle is transported after it has been loaded.

Additional towing distance: the distance that falls outside the kilometres included in the applicable local towing charge.

For longer-distance jobs, the published $2 to $5/km additional-distance rate becomes an important part of the estimate.


The exact pickup and destination therefore matter when calculating a longer tow.



7. The destination can change the practical requirements

A tow to a nearby repair shop is usually a different job from transporting a vehicle to a destination several hours away.

For longer transportation, factors such as total loaded distance, vehicle dimensions, equipment selection, road conditions and the logistics of getting the truck back into service can all become relevant.

This is why a long-distance quote should be based on the actual pickup and destination rather than a generic per-kilometre estimate.

Accident Damage Can Create Mechanical Variables

Collision damage makes towing less predictable because the vehicle may no longer behave mechanically as it normally would.


Examples include:

  • A wheel that is no longer aligned
  • Suspension components sitting at an abnormal angle
  • A damaged steering system
  • A locked or damaged wheel
  • A bumper or body panel hanging below normal clearance
  • Fluids or damaged components creating hazards around the vehicle
  • A vehicle that cannot be placed into neutral normally



The visible body damage is not necessarily the most important towing consideration. What matters is how the damage affects the vehicle's ability to roll, steer, support its own weight and be secured for transport.

Winter Conditions Can Change the Difficulty of a Tow

Saskatoon winter conditions can affect towing in ways that are not obvious from the distance alone.


Snow and ice can change:

  • Tire traction during loading
  • Braking distance around the tow truck
  • The ability to position equipment accurately
  • Access to parking lots and driveways
  • Whether a vehicle is frozen to the surface
  • How easily wheels rotate
  • The amount of room required to maneuver


A vehicle that would take only a few minutes to load on dry pavement can require considerably more care when it is surrounded by packed snow or sitting on ice.
